Kyriakos Kalaitzidis was born in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1969. He took an interest in Byzantine music from an early age, studying with Eleftherios Georgiades, and in 1986 he began to learn the oud. In 1993 he founded En Chordais, a cultural organization that focuses on the research, education and promotion of the musical traditions of the Mediterranean and he remains its artistic director. In this role he has been involved with several major gatherings of oud players, most notably the International Oud Meeting in Thessaloniki in 2002. He has also published an oud method and obtained a PhD in Byzantine Musicology from the University of Athens. He has contributed to numerous recordings of Greek and Turkish music and performed with En Chordais around the world, collaborating with musicians from the Middle East, China and Canada, as well as from Europe. He has also been involved in the ‘Üç Ud’un Hikâyesi’ (History of Three Ouds) project together with Mehmet Bitmez and Naseer Shamma.

Kyriakos Kalaitzidis, composer, oud player, artistic director and cofounder of “En Chordais”, is considered one of the most important musicians and scholars in the field of modal secular music of the post-Byzantine era and Mediterranean today. As a member of “En Chordais” or as soloist he has given more than 2000 concerts in 45 countries in major festivals and venues, among them at Berlin Philharmonie, Salle Pleyel (Paris), Lincoln Center (New York), Maison Symphonic (Montreal), Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Hong Kong Concert Hall, Alte Oper (Frankfurt), Fès Festival (Morocco), Melbourne Recital Centre, Cervantino Festival (Mexico), Sori Festival (South Korea) and many others.
